Blog Questions Challenge

Seth Goldstein, a good friend in the WordPress community, challenged me. I don’t usually participate in these things. But what the heck? Here are a few facts and figures about my blogging life.

Why Did You Start Blogging In The First Place?

I started blogging in the early 2000s. It was the cool thing to do back in those days. My subject of choice was my favorite NFL team – the New Orleans Saints. I even interviewed a few players. I had a lot of fun but fatigue set in after a few years. Perhaps I took things too seriously?

More recently, I wanted to start a blog to share things that didn’t fit with any of my writing gigs. That’s why this site exists!

What Platform Are You Using to Manage Your Blog, And Why Do You Use It?

I use WordPress to power the blog. It’s a tool I’ve worked with extensively over the past 15 years.

I still love WordPress because of its flexibility. There are no hard and fast limits on what kind of site you can build. Plus, it was born as a blogging platform. Why would I use anything else?

Have You Blogged On Other Platforms Before?

I used a content management system (CMS) called CutePHP back in the day. It was a neat app that used a flat-file database.

I found it to be a great introduction to using a CMS. There were some limitations, though, and that led me to WordPress.

How Do You Write Your Posts?

I prefer to use Microsoft Word or (in a pinch) Google Docs. I then copy the text into WordPress and add images, etc.

I’m also obsessed with the free version of Grammarly. I try to guess all the pro-level suggestions. It’s sort of a game.

When Do You Feel Most Inspired To Write?

That’s a difficult question. I can feel inspired at just about any time. A thought will hit me and I start writing.

Do You Normally Publish Immediately After Writing, Or Do You Let It Simmer?

I typically schedule a future date for publishing – which is difficult for me. I often have the urge to publish immediately.

What’s Your Favorite Post On Your Blog?

Probably the first one, “The Web as a Plot of Land“. It recounts my 30 years on the web and how things have changed.

Any Future Plans For the Blog?

I want to find new subjects to explore. People expect me to write about tech – and I’m happy to do that. But I’d also like to write more poetry and humor.

Who Will Participate Next?

I’m not one to challenge others. But ping me if you decide to participate!
