Last year, I ditched Facebook and X. I couldn’t stand the negativity and the impact it had on my mental health.
These days, most of my time on social networks is focused on business. I share my articles and podcasts. As such, I decided to go head-on into LinkedIn. The results have been mixed.
On the positive side, I haven’t seen many divisive political statements. That brings a little more peace of mind. The platform has even helped me grow my professional network a bit.
What’s the downside? Well, I’m inundated with offers from people seeking work. OK, I get it. We all need to pay the rent and put food on the table. I don’t reply to them. That alone should tell them to move on.
But it’s not just a one-and-done request. Instead, I get repeated messages from the same people. If I haven’t responded to your first five attempts, what makes you think you’ll ever get the sale?
It all reminds me of the now-defunct Circuit City. The once-mighty electronics retailer was famous for their sharks, ahem, salespeople. Someone was waiting at every turn to try to sell you that CD player or projection TV.
Maybe that’s the beauty of the modern internet. I can take my very own Circuit City clone with me everywhere I go. Now, the aggressive sales tactics are mine to enjoy, 24/7!
